Hajduk Split made an excellant start to the new campaign with a 6-1 demolition of Istra Pula. Hajduk's entire midfield and strikeforce gone on the scoresheet with Ahmad scoring his first goal. Marin Ljubicic also got on the scoresheet to stake his claim in the side in the face of Jurica Vranjes imminent arrival. Mirko Oremus also netted and looks set for a fine season after impressing in the summer preparations. Coach Stanko Poklepovic looks set to give Ahmad a run in the side. Marin Tomasov meanwhile has drifted to the substitutes bench, though may return if Senijad Ibricic transfers before the deadline.

Dinamo on paper had an easier game against Dragovoljac and score four times. Pedro Morales kept up his good form from last season by scoring on the opening day. Sammir and Miroslav Slepicka was also on target. Leonard Mesaric who could be the find of the summer scored the fourth. Velimir Zajec was looking for Ilija Sivonjic and Dodo to get on the scoresheet, with Zdravko Mamic currently assessing Montenegro frontman Fatos Beciraj.

NK Zagreb will breathe a huge sigh of relief after starting their new campaign with a win over Lokomotiva. Ivan Kristanovic scored twice with Jurendic adding a third late on. Lokomotiva scored through Ivan Peko. Rijeka were also winnings coming through a tough match with RNK Split thanks to Velimir Vidic's own goal on his debut. Karlovac were more convincing winners as they put away Zapresic 3-0.

Varazdin also got off to a fine start following Davor Vugrinec's return to the club. Two goals by Josip Brezovec help them defeat Zadar 2-1. In Sunday evenings games Cibalia got off to a strong start by defeating highly fancied Osijek 3-0. Mladen Bartolovic showed his value by scoring on his debut. Elvis Kokalovic meanwhile was the matchwinner as Slaven Belupo beat Sibenik 1-0.
